Actually I learnt my English grammar and vocab much more from the books I was devouring than from my English teachers. Heck, I didn't pay much attention cause the lessons were BORING. Razz

the Bear SG

i wasn't taught proper english...

i read comics, the old war comics, Beano, Dandy, 2000AD, Marvel Comics, Archie, Ghost Stories, Twilight Zone, Asterix, Tintin, and a whole host of other comics...

So, the key to a relatively decent standard of English, which includes the ability to speak and write in complete sentences without spelling or grammatical cock-ups, is to inculcate a habit of reading. And by reading I don’t mean trash like Singapore Ghost Stories or any similar crap. There’s only so much a teacher can do in the classroom.

Fatum SG

nah ... I still believe in the good old fashioned grammer exercises and drills though .....

I think part of the problem is that the new style of teaching English doesn't involve as much grammer drills anymore ....

Fatum SG

what's with this thing today ? ... dp again ... Confused

Honestly, I had no bloody idea about the rules of grammar , or how to identify a noun, pronoun, adjective, consonance, etc etc all the way up to A Levels and beyond. I did learn my vowels from an enid blython story. Mr. Green

All the reading I did somehow taught me how sentences should be phrased/constructed, on a cognitive level. And I had a dictionary handy when I encountered words I did not know the meaning of.

Rhonda SG

I read a lot when young. So I guessed that's where I picked up my English skills.

But I remember loving my English teachers and the English lessons too! Somehow, I latched on very fast to grammar and all that. I never complained about English homework one... and even finished tons of English assessment books every year! Laughing But the Maths and Chinese assessment books are always very clean and untouched one. Embarassed

I remember having to learn about Antonyms, Synonyms and all from Primary 4 onwards, using this supplementary textbook, 'Primary English', different colours and thicknesses for different years. That was good!

There was also this series of very good vocabulary assessment books. Not sure if they're still being published.

And the Pacific English thick, fat supplementary text... very very good for grammar! Very Happy

And there was the "First Aid for English", which subsequently became re-published as "The New First Aid for English". Bear was saying he found an old old copy at home, probably belonging to his parents. Now, that was a good book!

av98m SG

Until today, I still have no idea what the hell they are. Laughing

Well i think we are on the fore cog of the wheel... women are indeed empowered (remember that term lol) and now there is more of a reflection upon the boys and young men. Thru empowering the girls at school it has been found that the results for boys has indeed gone down in the edutcational system. There has been a call for more men to take up teaching and provide more of a role model for young men.

But if you were a man you would never want to be in a situation where girls or their parents make any accusation of the sexual kind. Whether be true you wont have a career left. This one reason why men dont go into such professions here, and some have been driven out.

So the government wants to explore more programs to address suicide in men, which has outstripped the numbers of women.

A former premier of Melbourne has formed the "Beyond Blue" which is targetted at older men with depression.

The man who was death SG

Hu lo lo Mr. Green

Rhonda SG

Yeah, a verb is a doing word. In its finite tense, it would be procratinate, sleep, etc. If you + ing to it, it would mean a verb in its continuous tense liao.

Not bad, stella, but you got your tenses and verbs kinda mixed up liao. (I think! Razz My English is very rusty liao! Razz )

Wait till we talk about adverbs! Laughing Twisted Evil

stellazio SG
